Senate President Pro Tempore David B. McBride’s
statement on President Trump's suspension of DACA program

Senate President Pro Tempore David B. McBride issued the following statement regarding the Trump administration's announcement that it will rescind the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program:

“President Trump’s announcement that he will suspend the DACA program is a cruel, short-sighted, and arbitrary attack on hundreds of thousands of families across America. This country was founded, built, and defined by immigrants. My family, as well as my colleagues’ and the president’s, share in that heritage as much as anyone. That is the American story; but, rather than celebrating it, the president has set out to undermine and revise it for political gain.

I support a good faith discussion on how to reform and enforce our immigration system, in alignment with our economic and national security priorities. Targeting and forcing DREAMers into hiding is not a legitimate part of that discussion. 1,444 Delawarean DREAMers live in our neighborhoods, go to our schools, and support our economy. This is the only home they’ve ever known. To scapegoat and potentially deport them—often to dangerous countries where they have no memories or connection—as a consequence of their parents’ actions is a waste of precious law enforcement resources, a blow to the economy, and an abdication of moral leadership.

I join Democrats and Republicans alike in condemning this callous, cynical, capricious attack and calling on Congress to permanently protect DREAMers as a vital and welcome part of this country."
