Biography:
Sen. Bruce Ennis is a lifelong resident of Smyrna who has represented his hometown in the Delaware General Assembly for nearly four decades. The 14th Senate District stretches from the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal to Dover, and includes, Port Penn, Odessa, Townsend, Leipsic and parts of Smyrna, Clayton, Middletown and Dover.

After graduating from John Bassett Moore High School in Smyrna, Ennis joined the Delaware Air National Guard and later spent 20 years as a trooper in the Delaware State Police, where he retired at the rank of captain.

He is a life member of the Citizens’ Hose Co. fire department in Smyrna, having served in numerous administrative and line officer positions over the past 60 years, including fire chief and president. He also is active in the Delaware Volunteer Firefighter’s Association and the DelMarVa Volunteer Firemen’s Association.

Ennis was first elected as a state representative from the 28th District in 1982. He continued in that role until 2007 when voters elected him to succeed the late James T. Vaughn Sr. in the 14th Senate District.

Sen. Ennis has dedicated his entire life to public service and he remains one of the General Assembly’s strongest advocates for the volunteer fire and emergency medical services, law enforcement issues and the community’s right-to-know in matters related to the storage and transportation of hazardous materials.

He also is a champion for preserving open space and farmland, along with sensible land-use policies that encouraged planned growth and protection of the environmentally-fragile areas along the coast.

Sen. Ennis currently serves as chair of the Senate’s Agriculture and Veterans Affairs committees. He also serves as vice chair of the Corrections & Public Safety Committee and as a member of the Labor Committee and the budget-writing Joint Finance Committee.

Sen. Ennis has two daughters and two granddaughters. Grace D. Ennis, his wife of 50 years, passed away in 2017.
