Nonprofits, interfaith community draw local officials’ support for Harvey relief campaign

Sen. Stephanie Hansen, colleagues will partner with Hurricane relief “Operation”
With Houston and its surrounding communities still reeling from the devastation of Hurricane Harvey, a Middletown clergyman is rallying a coalition of dozens of nonprofits, faith communities, community leaders, and volunteers around a statewide relief effort—and state officials are lining up to support the cause.

That effort, Operation Fill That Truck For Texas, has identified a list of needed relief supplies and secured eight drop-off sites in all three counties. On October 22, volunteers will load those supplies into a tractor-trailer and send them off to Houston, TX.

Bishop Jeffery Broughton, Sr. of Living Grace Worship Cathedral alluded to the Book of Matthew, saying he was moved to take action through compassion for those in need.

"A natural disaster has a way of uniting us together through faith, love and compassion for those in need,” said Bishop Broughton. “Hurricane Harvey has affected us all emotionally, mentally and physically through all types of media and personal relationships. In Matthew 25:42, Jesus says: ‘For I was hungry and you gave Me no food; I was thirsty and you gave Me no drink; I was a stranger and you did not take Me in, naked and you did not clothe Me, sick and in prison and you did not visit Me... Inasmuch as you did not do it for the least of these, you did not do it to Me.’

“It is our responsibility to provide as much help and resources to those that are in need. I love people and if I can bring Glory to God the father by helping and serving others locally and nationally, then I’m living my purpose here on earth."

Broughton is a constituent of Sen. Stephanie Hansen, D-Middletown, who says she’s throwing her support behind the effort and rallying her colleagues to join her.

“The news and images coming out of Texas have been heartbreaking for people across the country,” said Sen. Hansen. “That’s why I was so moved to learn that Bishop Broughton was coordinating a statewide relief effort for victims of Hurricane Harvey. Bishop Broughton and his wife believe deeply in loving their neighbors—including those halfway across the country—and they’ve worked tirelessly to unite different faith communities, nonprofits, local businesses, unions, and volunteers around the cause of service to those in need. In a time of such incredible need, that show of unity is commendable, and agreeing to partner with their campaign was an easy decision. Several colleagues in my Caucus have already agreed to support this effort, and I invite leaders across Delaware—Democrats and Republicans alike—to join us.”

In addition to Sen. Hansen, officials supporting the effort include Lt. Governor Bethany Hall-Long; Senate President Pro Tempore David McBride, D-Hawk’s Nest; and Sen. Nicole Poore, D-New Castle. They join dozens of mission partners identified by Bishop Broughton, including:
