Senate Majority announces new Communications Director
Senate President Pro Tempore David B. McBride announced Thursday that Mat Marshall has been selected as the new Communications Director for the Delaware State Senate Democratic Caucus.
Marshall, 26, is a lifelong Delawarean who has worked since March 2016 as the Majority Caucus’ Communications Assistant. He succeeds Jesse Chadderdon, who was named the Executive Director of the Delaware Democratic Party earlier this summer.
"I always remind people how much we, as legislators, rely on the tireless work of our staff. Mat is a prime example,” said Sen. McBride.“I’m thrilled that he’ll be leading the charge on our messaging and communications as we close out the year and head into the next legislative session. His work has spoken for itself since he joined our staff, and his talent as a writer, strategist, and advisor will be critical to our Caucus as we work to support our values and our constituents.”
Prior to his work in the legislature, Marshall worked across the state with local officials, including U.S. Sen. Tom Carper, Rep. Bryon Short, and former Gov. Jack Markell. His career has given him a broad set of creative and administrative skills and a strong understanding of Delaware politics and government.
“It’s been a pleasure to work with Mat over the last two legislative sessions,” said Senate Majority Leader Margaret Rose Henry. “His abilities as a writer are complemented by a deep sense of dedication to his community that speaks to our values as a Caucus. The Senate will be working on some major challenges this year—Mat’s support, leadership, and counsel will be invaluable to that work. I’m looking forward to continuing to work with him in his new role.”
"Mat is a sharp political mind with a strong command of communications,” said Senate Majority Whip Nicole Poore. “Just as important to me are his work ethic, his honesty, and his sensitivity to other perspectives and experiences—qualities that we strive to embody each day. His job, like ours, is as much about speaking to Delawareans as it is about understanding and appreciating their needs. Mat’s ability to empathize, to speak to our principles, and to see the bigger picture made him the best choice for the position.”
“I can’t overstate my gratitude for this opportunity and for the Senate’s confidence in me,” Marshall said. “The Caucus has an important story to tell, and I’m ready to continue working with each of our members to carry forward our values and priorities: supporting working Delawareans, fostering economic opportunity, fighting for public education, protecting our environment, and investing in our future.”
Marshall graduated from Cab Calloway School of the Arts in 2009 and earned a Bachelor of Science in Government and Public Policy from Wilmington University in 2015. He lives in Wilmington’s Washington Heights neighborhood
