Senate Majority Whip Margaret Rose Henry’s statement on the death of James Gilliam Sr.
WILMINGTON – Senate Majority Whip Margaret Rose Henry, who represents Wilmington’s 2nd Senatorial District, offered the following remarks in reflection of the life of James Gilliam Sr., who has died at the age of 95.
“Today Delaware lost a great leader and a wonderful mentor. James Gilliam Sr. was a giant of a man, a prophet whose wise counsel was sought by many. I knew Jim for more than 30 years and during that time watched as he opened doors for so many in our community. He was a champion for civil rights, fought hard for affordable housing and advocated for employment opportunities for Wilmington’s youth. He served in the military with distinction despite facing racial prejudice while he fought for his country in World War II and Korea. And he continued to serve in new ways when he returned home. I am so saddened by this monumental loss. My heart goes out to his family and extended family – the hundreds of people he mentored who I know will preserve his legacy through action and advocacy.”
