Sen. David Sokola’s statement on the confirmation of Education Secretary Steven Godowsky
Sen. David Sokola, D-Newark, who chairs the Senate Education Committee, is pleased with the Senate’s confirmation of former New Castle County Vo-Tech Superintendent Steven Godowsky, who will succeed Mark Murphy as Delaware’s Secretary of Education.
“This is a critical juncture for public education here in Delaware, and based on an impressive resume and the testimony we heard in the Senate today, I think Governor Markell made an inspired choice in Steven Godowsky. It is no secret that our state’s education advocates have become fragmented in recent years and we need a leader who is ready to step up and build new consensus on how we tackle important issues like testing, Common Core implementation and closing the achievement gap. I’m also heartened, that as the superintendent leading our state’s vocational high schools, Steven has seen first-hand the importance of providing choice and diversity in our public education options, so that families feel their children are getting the foundational learning experiences that are right for them. I look forward to working alongside him and hearing a fresh set of ideas for how we can engage teachers and parents, and expand opportunity for our all of our students.”
