Sen. Robert Marshall calls for new Wilmington construction trade school

Speaking during Wednesday’s Senate Executive Committee hearing, Sen. Robert Marshall, D-Wilmington East, called on newly-confirmed Secretary of Education Steven Godowsky to help establish a new construction trade school in the City of Wilmington. Sen. Marshall also issued the following statement regarding the potential for the new school:

“Earlier this week, we learned that J.P. Morgan Chase would be bringing as many as 1,800 white collar jobs to our state.  That’s fantastic news that deserves to be celebrated, but I believe we must make a similar investment in our blue collar workforce. It’s not enough to just add jobs in and around Wilmington, but we need to create jobs for Wilmingtonians themselves. That’s why I’m calling on the Department of Education to help establish a new construction trade school within City limits, in the tradition of the original Wilmington Trade School and Brown Vocational High School that gave rise to the New Castle County Vo-Tech District.

“Whether it’s carpentry, masonry, painting or plumbing, the trades we teach our young people today could lead to the jobs of tomorrow. The Jackson Street Boys & Girls Club is one location that could provide classroom space, but the real classrooms could be the City’s 1,500 vacant homes, which instructors could use to train students while at the same time beautifying our neighborhoods. This has the potential to be a win for Wilmington on so many levels, and if we can make it
