STATEMENT: Sen. Laura Sturgeon to retire from Brandywine School District
Sen. Laura Sturgeon, D-Brandywine, released the following statement on Tuesday outlining her plans to retire from teaching at the end of the 2019 calendar year:
“It is with a heavy heart that I am announcing my intention to retire from the Brandywine School District following a 25-year career as a Delaware public school teacher, effective Jan. 1.
Helping expand students' minds by sharing the gifts of language and literature has always been a passion -- my way of working to improve our world. More recently, however, I have taken a more direct role in improving our state by using everything I have learned during my time in the classroom to inform policy as a state Senator and chair of the Senate Education Committee.
Each of these roles is too important for me to continue juggling both. That’s why I have decided to focus all of my energy on serving Delaware in my capacity as a state legislator.
This decision was not easy. But the voters of Senate District 4 have entrusted me to represent them for at least the next three years and that’s a duty and an honor that I take very seriously.
I would like to thank the Brandywine School District, where I have worked the past 8 years, for the opportunity to give back to the district from which I graduated, and New Castle County Vo-Tech for giving me my first teaching position in 1994 followed by 17 incredible years that shaped me as an educator. I hope to make you all proud in the Delaware General Assembly.”
