Statements from Senate Majority leadership on Rep. James "J.J." Johnson's retirement
DOVER - Senate President Pro Tempore David McBride, D-Hawk's Nest, Senate Majority Leader Margaret Rose Henry, D-Wilmington, and Senate Majority Whip Nicole Poore, D-New Castle, released the following statements regarding Rep. James "J.J." Johnson's announcement that he will retire at the end of his current term.
“This is a tough year for retirements in Legislative Hall," said Sen. McBride. "I’ve served with J.J. for over a decade, and I’ve always found him to be a model legislator: diligent, thoughtful, and in-tune with his district. He’s somebody who has always opted for a spot in the trenches over a place in the limelight, and thousands of Delawareans – including juveniles who interact with the justice system – are better off for it. His retirement is well-deserved, but he’s leaving some big shoes to fill and we’re going to miss him.” “I don’t know what this place is going to do without the two of us, but I’m glad I won’t be here to find out." said Sen. Henry. "Serving with J.J. for the last 13 years, both in Dover and in our districts, has been a joy and an honor. His fingerprints have been on most of Delaware’s major criminal justice and civil rights reforms over the past decade, and his leadership has been particularly important over the past decade. J.J. has always been guided by what’s right, rather than what’s easy or popular, and that’s made him one of the General Assembly’s most respected and well-liked members. His retirement is well-earned.” “J.J. shares his district with all three members of Senate Democratic leadership, and that has been our blessing," said Sen. Poore. We work as a team on behalf of the greater New Castle community, and I can’t overstate how important J.J. has been to that team. From his role on the Joint Finance Committee to his willingness to go to bat for every single family in his district, no matter how big or small the task, he has proven time and time again how much he loves his community – and we love him, too.”
