Statement from Senate President Pro Tempore David McBride on Senate passage of House Bill 300
Senate President Pro Tempore David McBride, D-Hawk's Nest, released the following statement regarding the Senate's passage of House Bill 300.
“Today, in an overwhelming and bi-partisan vote, the Senate passed House Bill 300, legislation banning the sale of bump stocks and trigger cranks like the one used in the Las Vegas massacre last year. We moved quickly to pass this legislation because we understand the urgency of protecting the public from firearm accessories that serve no conceivable purpose except to approximate an illegal automatic weapon. We also passed two amendments, in addition to amendments passed by the House. Like the House’s amendments, we believe that these changes will make a good bill even better by enhancing fairness and effectiveness, while honoring and preserving the bill’s intent. The bill now goes back to the House for a second vote, but this minor delay is a small price to pay – particularly if gun control receives the sustained attention that the legislature owes it. It’s our job to do the right thing, to be thorough, and to be responsive to our constituents. Those objectives are not mutually exclusive; in fact, they are complementary and necessary. We hope that the House will vote to advance HB 300 to the Governor’s desk and look forward to considering further measures to strengthen our gun laws.”
