Markell signs Bushweller bill allowing surviving spouses to keep military plates

Surviving spouses of service members who qualified for special military license plates will be able to keep using those plates after their loved ones die, under a law signed Thursday by Gov. Jack Markell.

Sen. Brian Bushweller, D-Dover, championed the measure because it gives spouses a way to continue honoring the service of their loved ones.

“I think all Delawareans feel a special pride in their loved ones service to our state and nation,” Bushweller said. “When you consider we have an entire new generation of veterans, I think this is a fitting way for families to pay tribute.”

The state offers special plates to veterans of the nation’s armed conflicts as well as for vets who have earned decorations or have been held as prisoners of war. Under the law, the commemorative license plates can be transferred at no cost, although annual renewal fees would still apply.

State Rep. Earl Jaques, D-Glasgow, who joined with Bushweller in seeking the law, said he thinks the law offers a chance for a fitting tribute.

“Surviving spouses of our military veterans want to carry on the legacies of service their loved ones embodied in life, and this is just a small way to help them do so,” said Jaques, chairman of the House Veterans Affairs Committee and a retired brigadier general in the Delaware Air National Guard.
Markell said he signed the law because it’s a way to recognize the support veterans have received on the home front.
“Just as we have a responsibility to honor our service members and veterans, we must recognize the invaluable and extraordinary contributions of their families,” Markell said. “I was proud to sign this legislation to further recognize military spouses.”
