Senators take oath of office during special session

Ten senators, including five Democrats elected to new terms on Nov. 4, took their oaths of office Tuesday at the outset of a one-day special session at Legislative Hall.

Gov. Jack Markell called the special session of the Senate to consider his nominee for the President Judgeship of the Superior Court. Because Delaware’s General Assembly ends its business on Election Day, members had to be sworn in and the Senate had to officially start the 148th General Assembly before it could take action on Markell’s nomination.
Sen. Brian Bushweller, D-Central Kent, was accompanied by his wife, Rocky Bushweller, as attorney James McGiffin administered his oath of office.

“As I take the oath of office for the position of State Senator for the third time, I am more mindful than ever of the fundamental importance of representing the people of the 17th District honestly, fairly and without bias, and with full understanding that all my constituents are entitled to be treated with respect and dignity,” Bushweller said. “I am honored that the voters have affirmed their faith in me and I pledge to continue my efforts to strengthen the quality of life we enjoy here in central Kent County, especially by helping preserve the good jobs we already have and by helping attract new jobs to our area.”

Sen. Bushweller was first elected to the Senate in 2008.

Sen. Bethany Hall-Long, D-Middletown, who also was first elected to the Senate in 2008, was accompanied by her husband, Dana, as Supreme Court Justice James Vaughn administered the oath.
“I look forward to continuing to serve the residents of the 10th Senatorial District on the issues that matter most to them,” Hall-Long said. “This is a critical time in Delaware given our economy. We need to take action to invest in our future to improve our schools, rebuild our infrastructure, attract new businesses to Delaware and incentivize the growth of existing businesses.  These will be my priorities. As Chair of the Senate Health Committee, my focus will remain on strengthening Delaware’s families and communities. I am honored and humbled to serve.”

Sen. Margaret Rose Henry, D-Wilmington East, was sworn in by Lt. Gov. Matt Denn. She was first elected to the Senate in 1994.

“I am truly honored that the residents of the 2nd Senatorial District have placed their faith in me again by electing me to a new term in the Delaware State Senate,” Henry said.

Sen. Bryan Townsend, D-Newark, was accompanied by his wife, Lilianna Townsend, as former Delaware Supreme Court Chief Justice Myron Steele administered the oath.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to continue serving the residents of the 11th District,” said Townsend, who was first elected to the Senate in 2012. “I look forward to working with a diverse set of stakeholders to craft solutions to the challenges Delaware faces.”

Sen. Robert Marshall, D-Wilmington West, was sworn in Saturday by Denn at an event in Marshall’s district.

“I’m proud to have the privilege of continuing to serve the people of my district and our state,” said Marshall, who begins his 11th term in the Senate.

The 148th General Assembly will reconvene on Tuesday, Jan. 13.
