Senate President Pro Tempore David B. McBride's statement on the passage of state's FY 2018 budget package
DOVER - Senate President Pro Tempore David B. McBride issued the following statement after the passage of the state’s fiscal year 2018 budget package:
"Tonight we approved a budget that, while far from perfect, keeps our state on solid financial footing for the next year. Due to what can only be described as fundamental ideological differences, it took an extraordinary amount of compromise and creativity to come to an agreement on a plan that could get to the Governor’s desk. The result is a budget that, on one hand, meets our core obligations as a government, but on the other, makes significant cuts to important services.
The good news is that, unlike some of our neighboring states in which government shutdowns are commonplace because Republicans and Democrats are unwilling to work together, Delaware has managed to continue its proud tradition of meeting its obligations in a responsible way, even though it was difficult. What we have not done, however, is solve our long-term structural challenges by ensuring newly created revenues are more predictable and tied to economic growth.
Still, I leave tonight very confident that we will take the same spirit of cooperation we saw over the last 24 hours into next year’s budget talks. And I know we can do a better job of expanding the discussion past simply balancing our budget and have a more robust conversation about our long-term vision for our great state."
